First Stage of Ukraine-Germany Criminal Identification System Project Completed

KYlV, July 3. The first stage of a Ukraine-Germany joint project to create a uniform information system for Ukraine's Ministry of Interior was completed. The project will case the exchange of urgent information between different subdivisions of the ministry and help in identifying criminals.

The project also stipulates computerizing seven checkpoints on Ukraine's western border in the immediate future, and eight more points by the end of the year. A press person in the frontier committee said the equipment for one check point is valued at $30,000, but its operation will reduce customs formalities to a minute.

The participants in the project include the Ministry of Interior, the State Frontier Committee, BankKomZviazok, and ZviazokInformServis, on the part of Ukraine, and Germany's Ministry of Internal Affairs and the firms Siemens Nixdorf and International Technology Center.

According to director of Siemens Nixdorf's representative office in Ukraine, Dr. Krauze, the first stage was implemented with funds provided by the German Internal Affairs Ministry. In all, the German law enforcement agency plans to allocate DM4 million for the next stages of the project, which will arrive into Ukraine in three installments - for the Interior Ministry, the state frontier committee and for training of personnel.
